CCU is a comprehensive, public liberal arts institution located in Conway, S.C., nine miles from the world-renowned resort destination Myrtle Beach. It its relatively short history, Coastal Carolina University has grown to become the fourth largest university in the state of South Carolina, with an enrollment of more than 10,600 students. In the last 10 years, enrollment has grown by more than 35 percent. One of the most distinctive characteristics of a Coastal Carolina University education is the hands-on opportunity students have to work one-on-one with faculty in the learning and research process. The strong faculty-student mentoring relationship, resulting in valuable experiential learning at all levels of the academic process, is a Coastal Carolina University tradition. As outlined in the CCU Mission Statement, CCU is "a student-centered learning community in which students, faculty and staff embrace education as a lifelong commitment that supports both the development of knowledge in specific fields and the dedication to learning that empowers productive, responsible, healthy citizens with a global perspective. Coastal Carolina University embraces four principal values: truth, respect, integrity and excellence." Many of CCU's premier academic programs were established in response to opportunities connected with the local environment and economy. Capitalizing on its proximity to the coast, CCU has built a world-class marine science program. Research conducted by the marine science department plays a vital role in shaping public policy relating to coastal resource management issues along the South Carolina and U.S. coastline. To help support Myrtle Beach's famed golfing industry, CCU launched a Golf Management Program that is now one of only 18 such programs in the country that is accredited by the PGA of America. CCU's rigorous and competitive theatre program, the only one of its kind in the country, offers a B.F.A. with four separate concentrations: acting, design and technology, physical theatre, and musical theatre. Coastal Carolina University has academic exchange partnerships with more than 80 institutions on five continents and has double degree partnerships with 18 universities in China alone. The current student body is comprised of students from all 50 states and 70 countries. Coastal is a member of the Sun Belt Conference and offers eight men's sports and 11 women's sports. CCU's baseball team won the 2016 College World Series, which brought the university an extraordinary level of recognition, including kudos from the New York Times for our "elegant, Chaucer-inspired mascot" -- a reference to Chauncey the Chanticleer, derived from "The Canterbury Tales." CCU is well known for its support of the military and its veterans. For eight consecutive years, Coastal has been named a Military Friendly School, and CCU was named an official Purple Heart University in 2017.
