Sonoma State University is a mid-sized (9,400 students) residential, public university committed to student retention, graduation and satisfaction. SSU has a commitment to graduating students who have the ability to think critically and work collaboratively. The quality of the educational experience at Sonoma State University is derived from the collaborative work between students and faculty. Sonoma State provides students with a balanced program of liberal arts and sciences and career preparation with selected professional programs in business, nursing and engineering science. Instructional programs are designed to challenge students not only to acquire knowledge but also to develop the skills of critical analysis, careful reasoning, creativity, and self-expression. SSU offers 46 major and 47 minor programs with 14 masters degree programs. The University offers nine credential programs and eight undergraduate certificate programs, including a new Hospitality Management Certificate and a Professional Social Media Certificate. Sonoma State is committed to creating a learning community in which people from diverse backgrounds and cultures are valued for the breadth of their perspectives and are encouraged in their intellectual pursuits. Sonomas faculty maintain active scholarly pursuits and the University encourages projects that involve students in research and other creative activities at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Currently 3,100 students live in on campus housing. The SSU residential community offers a variety of accommodations from shared bedrooms in residential suites to private bedrooms and baths in apartments. SSUs Recreation Center, complete with a climbing wall, received the Outstanding Sports Facilities Award by the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association. A new Student Center houses dining and student services such as the bookstore, Associated Students, multicultural center (The HUB), meeting rooms and the largest ballroom in Sonoma County.The renovated 21st century Darwin Hall, the Universitys science building, has new laboratories and classrooms supporting the needs of modern science curriculum. The Donald & Maureen Green Music Center with its acoustically-perfect Weill Hall, consists of multiple performance venues, a music education hall, sprawling outdoor spaces, a stunning restaurant and more. Audiences have filled Weill Hall since the day it opened in Sept. 2012 to hear world-class artists such as Yo Yo Ma, Jason Mraz, Hilary Hahn, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Josh Groban and dozens of others. The Green Music Center is a place where the next generation of fine musicians, vocalists, and dancers will develop their artistry. The University was gifted the Fairfield Osborne Preserve, located within a mile of campus, which is dedicated to protecting and restoring natural communities and fostering ecological understanding through education and research. More recently, the University accepted a 3,500 acre wilderness preserve in northern Sonoma County, the Galbreath Wildlands Preserve, to promote environmental education, research and stewardship of Northern Californias diverse landscape. The Sonoma State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics sponsors 13 intercollegiate sports, five mens and eight womens: mens baseball, basketball, golf, soccer and tennis; womens basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball, and water polo. The Sonoma State Seawolves, are members of the NCAA (Division II) and they compete in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) and the Pacific West Conference (PacWest). Through the years, the Seawolves have had multiple national championships at the Division II level.
